Lyon sign Paquetá from Milan - Reine-Adélaïde to join Hertha in record deal?
It is official, Lucas Paquetá has joined Olympique Lyon from AC Milan. The Champions League semifinalist confirmed that they have signed the 23-year-old Brazilian on Wednesday night. He will become their most expensive signing of the 2020/21 season.
Milan will receive €20 million and will receive add-ons should Lyon sell the player. At Lyon, where he is now ranked as the seventh most expensive transfer together with Bruno Guimarães, Paquetá has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2025.
The Serie A side signed the left-footed midfielder for €38.4 million from Flamengo in January 2019. But at the Rossoneri Paquetá struggled to fulfill his potential. In 44 games he scored just one goal and three assists.
Between 2019 and 2020, Milan had to write off €15 million of the paid sum already. The club has now been able to salvage at least some of the remaining €23 million that has to be paid. "I thank him for his contribution and wish him all the best," Milan head coach Stefano Pioli said on Wednesday. "He had some difficulties here—but he has the qualities to make up for it. He has to believe in himself."
Paquetá deal paid for: Olympique Lyon sell Reine-Adélaïde to Hertha in record deal
Olympique have already financed the Paquetá deal by selling Jeff Reine-Adélaïde to Hertha Berlin. Both Bild and RMC Sport reported that the deal was done. Both clubs have reached an agreement.
The 22-year-old, who wanted to leave Lyon after the club failed to qualify for a European competition, will become Hertha's new record transfer. Hertha are reportedly paying €27 million. As a result, Reine-Adélaïde will replace the current record holder and former Olympique teammate Lucas Tousart, for whom Hertha paid €25 million to Lyon last January.
As part of Paquetá's presentation, Olympique Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has denied that a deal with Hertha has been completed. The OL president did, however, confirm that both clubs are in talks with one another.
